Calvert W. Jones is an associate professor at the University of Maryland in the department of government and politics. She earned her PhD from Yale University in comparative politics, international relations, and Middle East politics with an additional field certification in methodology. Jones’ research focuses broadly on nationalism, citizenship, and social engineering, especially in the authoritarian political contexts of the Middle East. Her current book project investigates the dynamics of tolerance within contemporary authoritarian regimes, and is tentatively entitled Tolerance Under Authoritarianism: State, Society, and the Politics of Avoidance. Her first book, Bedouins into Bourgeois: Remaking Citizens for Globalization, was published by Cambridge University Press in 2017. Her peer-reviewed articles have appeared in journals such as World Politics, the British Journal of Political Science, Perspectives on Politics, Comparative Political Studies, International Studies Quarterly, and International Security, and she has also published commentary by invitation for Foreign Affairs, Harvard Business Review, and The Washington Post, among other media outlets. Her work has been cited in venues ranging from Science and the New Yorker to The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Arab Weekly, Times Higher Education, and HuffPost. She also holds an MPhil in international relations from the University of Cambridge, a master’s degree in information management and systems from the University of California, Berkeley, and a bachelor’s degree from Columbia University in philosophy and computer science.
