On December 6, 2017, the Arab Gulf States Institute in Washington partnered with Raytheon to host the second annual UAE Security Forum. “UAESF 2017: Defense Industry and Economic Diversification” brought together private sector leaders from technology-driven industries in the United Arab Emirates, U.S. defense industry representatives, and policymakers to offer their perspectives on challenges and opportunities in Gulf countries’ efforts to wean their economies off government spending and state-controlled growth.
Yemen’s humanitarian crisis is now the world’s largest in terms of the number of people in need. The crisis is the result of long-simmering structural issues in Yemen’s economy, the civil war, and the politicization of the economy during the three-year-old conflict. The crisis cannot be resolved through humanitarian aid alone. Any improvement in the humanitarian environment will require an intervention in Yemen’s macroeconomy, particularly its banking system.
Before he headed to the Middle East on his five-country journey, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was preparing himself for an unpleasant encounter with an angry Turkish president, a sullen Egyptian president, and a tight-fisted international community gathered in Kuwait clearly reluctant to commit billions of dollars to rebuild Iraq. Trump, particularly his decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

The Arab Gulf States Institute in Washington is pleased to announce that Alanoud Al-Sharekh has joined the institute as a non-resident fellow. Al-Sharekh is currently a consulting partner at Ibtkar Strategic Consultancy and a research associate at the London Middle East Institute at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London. She serves as chairperson of the “Friends Who Care” project in Kuwait, as well as the Abolish 153 campaign, the winner of the 2016 European Union Chaillot Prize for Human Rights.
