Wahba Honored at the 2018 Kahlil Gibran Awards
Ambassador Marcelle M. Wahba, AGSIW president, received the 2018 Najeeb Halaby Award for Public Service at the Arab American Institute’s Kahlil Gibran Spirit of Humanity Awards, joining a growing list of distinguished individuals whose work, commitment, and support make a difference in promoting coexistence and inclusion in all walks of life. AGSIW is proud to congratulate Ambassador Wahba on receiving this prestigious award.
U.S. President Donald J. Trump faces a deadline for the recertification of sanctions relief on May 12, when a waiver of a key sanctions law expires, and would need to be renewed lest the sanctions provided for in that law snap back into force. For the United States to reinstate these sanctions could jeopardize U.S. adherence to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. This is a wholly American-made ultimatum, which has put European allies on edge, and prompted the Iranian foreign minister to make his case (and threats of “consequences” of exit) to the U.S. public this week.
On April 8, a group of officials from the United Arab Emirates flew on a government jet from Abu Dhabi to Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia. Onboard were three bags containing $9.6 million for the salaries of 2,407 Somali National Army soldiers, including the counterterrorism troops that UAE special forces have been training since 2015. This training, at a UAE-run military base in Mogadishu, is part of the UAE’s efforts since the end of Somalia’s civil war to support both federal and regional state security forces as well as the broader campaign against violent extremism.
In the Gulf Arab states, a region with a population of over 50 million, there is only one B Corp. Luxembourg, a microstate with fewer than 600,000 people, has two. B Corps aim to use “business as a force for good,” committing themselves not only to earning profit, but also to addressing social or environmental issues. B Corps are businesses held to a rigorous internationally recognized standard of excellence by social, environmental, accountability, and transparency metrics.

Saudi Arabia started three years ago to restructure the economy, including the energy sector. The goals are to reduce the Saudi economy’s heavy dependence on oil, diversify both national income and government revenues, and to have more efficient and transparent organizations, including privatizing different activities. In the energy sector, it includes many areas such as Aramco’s IPO and increasing the use of natural gas for utilities.

Source data, compile bibliographies, literature reviews, and write briefs on relevant topics. Create charts and graphics for AGSIW publications.
