Over the last few years many cities have attempted to integrate cultural developments within their overall planning strategy. This involves the utilization of spectacular architecture and conversion of formerly industrial areas into art districts. As a result, many of these newly developed areas have witnessed an influx of upscale retail and housing catering to a wealthy and highly educated clientele. The Gulf Arab states have been at the forefront of such developments within the wider Arab region. Seen as a way to diversify their economic output, these gleaming museums and cultural centers primarily aim to attract tourists. At the same time, through such initiatives the region is setting its sights at claiming the mantle of the Arab world’s cultural leaders. This paper is published in conjunction with AGSIW's second annual Gulf Arts and Culture Symposium.
The April 15 Arab League meeting in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia earned the name “the Jerusalem summit” due to the strong support Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz and assembled Arab delegates declared for the Palestinian capital. But in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province, attention was drawn to an official reception hosted by King Salman for a group of local notables. Saudi newspapers published – and Shia chatrooms and WhatsApp groups circulated – pictures of King Salman smiling and shaking hands with a number of Shia clerics and businessmen, prominent among them leading Shia opposition cleric Hassan al-Saffar. It was the first public meeting of the two men since the freeze in relations with the Shia Islamic reform movement during the height of Arab Spring protests.

Will Donald Trump walk away from the Iran nuclear deal, as he has threatened, on May 12? In these pages, I explained why it is in his interests to instead craft a new deal with the European signatories and claim to have “fixed” the Iran agreement. However, many signs suggest he’s determined to definitively reject it. That could all be misdirection – or fair warning. Most conversations now hinge on the binary question of whether Mr Trump will “fix or nix” the Iran nuclear agreement. But in practice he has a wide range of options for rejecting the deal.

About the Candidate: Provide research assistance and support to senior resident scholars at AGSIW. At the direction of the scholars, conduct research on Gulf political economy, foreign policy, business politics, finance, macroeconomics, and U.S. policy toward the region. Monitor contemporary developments in the Gulf states and U.S. policy, including reviews of regional and international media. Source data, compile bibliographies, literature reviews, and write briefs on relevant topics. Create charts and graphics for AGSIW publications.
