There is a paradox in women’s achievement across the Gulf states. By most international standards, female citizens of the six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states have good access to education systems, affordable and proficient health care and social services. Women are graduating from university in higher numbers than men, maternal health risks are low and childcare and family support services are plentiful. However, women in the Gulf remain marginalized and, in some sectors, nearly invisible from the workforce. In particular, women are most absent from economic life in the private sector. Read more
Russia, Iran, and Turkey have taken the lead in attempting to bring about conflict resolution in Syria through the Astana talks that began in late 2016. That these three governments are working together is quite remarkable considering how up until recently, Turkey was actively supporting anti-government forces in Syria while Russia and Iran have been supporting the Assad regime. President Donald J. Trump’s administration and U.S. partners in the region – in particular, Saudi Arabia – see Yemen as an important arena in which to confront Iran’s destabilizing behavior, and to neutralize the threat it is seen as posing to Gulf Arab states. But this confrontational approach carries the risk of triggering Iranian retaliation, or even an armed conflict involving Iran, the United States, and the United States’ regional partners. On November 15-16, 2016, Chatham House hosted the Gulf Geopolitics Forum, the first of two events to be convened jointly by the Middle East and North Africa Programme and the US and the Americas Programme at Chatham House and AGSIW. The meeting brought together international experts in government and academia, along with policymakers, to assess the often troubled relationship between Iran and its Gulf Arab neighbours, while parsing U.S. policy toward the Gulf. The second meeting was hosted by AGSIW on February 24 and the final report will be released in the coming weeks. Read more

AGSIW Senior Resident Scholar Hussein Ibish appeared on Al Jazeera's NewsHour to discuss a bomb attack in Homs, Syria, noting that the attack was reminiscent of a July 2012 attack on regime security headquarters in Damascus. He also discussed strategic setbacks in Syria for rebels, including the fall of Aleppo and the continued rise of al-Qaeda affiliates. Ibish additionally commented on U.S. foreign policy toward the Israeli-Palestinian conflict for ABC Radio National.
AGSIW Research Associate Yerevan Saeed commented on the conflict between former Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and Masoud Barzani, president of the Kurdistan Regional Government, for The New Arab: "The conflict between Erbil and Baghdad has been, and will be, about struggle of power regardless of who comes to office in Baghdad."
