Sultan Qaboos bin Said of Oman appointed on March 2 Sayyid Assad bin Tariq al-Said as deputy prime minister for international cooperation. The appointment triggered immediate speculation among Western observers that Assad is being groomed to become Qaboos’ successor. As part of its new energy roundtable series, AGSIW hosted a discussion on March 10 with Ibrahim Al-Muhanna, former advisor to the minister of energy, industry, and mineral resources of Saudi Arabia. International oil markets have entered an unprecedented era of change following the extraordinary rise of technology-driven shale oil production in the United States, and the deep decline in global energy prices to which it has contributed. Al-Muhanna addressed OPEC policy, cooperation with other oil producing countries, and the outlook for the international oil market. Read more

In interviews with Al Arabiya, AGSIW President Ambassador Marcelle M. Wahba and Senior Resident Scholar Hussein Ibish commented on Saudi Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's visit to Washington, DC to meet with President Donald J. Trump.
Writing for Bloomberg, authors Nafeesa Syeed and Glenn Carey cited AGSIW Senior Resident Scholar Kristin Smith Diwan's remarks at the Atlantic Council on the Saudi visit. Diwan commented that due to frustrations with former U.S. President Barack Obama, Gulf Cooperation Council states are responding to Trump's "more personalized foreign policy." Speaking with Reuters, AGSIW Board Member F. Gregory Gause, III discussed the Saudi view of the new U.S. administration in comparison to the Obama administration: "I think they’re going to find rhetorically that the new administration says things and uses language they like more." He continued, “But I think on the ground, we’re not going to see an enormous difference.”
Ibish additionally commented on Saudi King Salman's visit to China, as part of his Asia tour, for China Daily: "King Salman's visit to Beijing is in many ways the most complex, and potentially meaningful, far-reaching and important part of the whole trip."
Outreach
At the Atlantic Council panel, "Regional Perspectives on US Policy in the Middle East," on March 13, AGSIW Senior Resident Scholar Kristin Smith Diwan discussed the Gulf states' relationship with the Trump administration.
On March 14, AGSIW Senior Resident Scholar Karen E. Young gave a presentation on Saudi Arabia's economy at the workshop “Challenges and Opportunities: Saudi Arabia in a Changing World,” in Paris, France sponsored by the Gulf Futures Center and the Global Future College.
