On May 10, AGSIW brought together thought leaders from the Gulf Arab states, Europe, and the United States to discuss Saudi Arabia at a transformational moment in its history, as the country advances its ambitious reform program – Vision 2030. With a clarity of purpose crystalized by the oil shock of 2014, a year ago the Saudi government initiated wide scale economic and public sector reforms aimed at diversifying its economy, rationalizing its public sector, reducing subsidies, stimulating the private sector, and restructuring its legal and regulatory framework. Global oil prices tumbled to six-month lows in June after an array of new supply data stoked pervasive doubts over OPEC’s strategy to reduce the massive stockpile weighing on markets. That the decision by OPEC and its nonmember partners to rein in production to hasten market rebalancing would lead to higher U.S. production was widely factored into forecasts, but the speed and scale of resurgent shale have raised alarms that a tidal wave of new supply is pushing prices toward the precipice once again. Speaking with World Politics Review, AGSIW Executive Vice President and former U.S. Ambassador to Yemen Stephen A. Seche commented on the role of former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh in the conflict in Yemen: "He is absolutely a product of his place, in that he came to power and stayed and decided not to go away."
Speaking with Bloomberg, AGSIW Senior Resident Scholar Kristin Smith Diwan commented on the implications of the ongoing GCC crisis: "This goes beyond Al Jazeera to a range of media that include more nationalist, critical and democratic views," She continued, "They complicate life for countries like Saudi and Yemen, and for the difficult transitions they are trying to achieve."

AGSIW President Ambassador Marcelle M. Wahba spoke at the Wilson Center’s Ground Truth Briefing: "Tensions in the Gulf: Implications for U.S. Policy." She noted that while it is in U.S. national interests to have a stable and unified Gulf Cooperation Council, Qatar needs to be more rigorous in combatting terrorist financing and stop providing a public platform for extremist voices.
AGSIW Senior Resident Scholar Hussein Ibish spoke at the conference "The Two-State Solution and Beyond" at Maison du Futur in Bikfaya, Lebanon, where he addressed the development of "outside-in" approaches to Middle East peace, focusing on the role Gulf Arab countries can play, given the emerging approach of the administration of U.S. President Donald J. Trump. The conference was also sponsored by the Al Quds Center and the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung.
Ibish also spoke at a plenary session of the 2017 Association for Israel Studies Conference at Brandeis University. Ibish focused on the regional changes over the decades since the 1967 war, and the role Gulf Arab countries can play in pursuing Israeli-Palestinian peace and creating a new strategic environment in the region.
AGSIW Visiting Scholar Hala Aldosari gave a presentation at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies on the impact of U.S. foreign policy on Saudi Arabia's public policy and gender reforms.
