The U.S. Central Command recently declassified decade-old interrogation reports of Qais al-Khazali, leader of the Asaib Ahl al-Haq militia, which won 15 seats in Iraq’s parliamentary elections in May. These reports shed new light on the Islamic Republic’s relationship with Iraqi Shia militias. But, so does a systematic survey of combat fatalities suffered by these militias in Iraq. Together they show how Tehran is trying to achieve its dual goals of continued Shia dominance in Baghdad while simultaneously securing dependency and loyalty of the militias to Tehran.

أمام أكثر من ثلاثة آلاف مدعو من دبلوماسيين وسياسيين وصحافيين غص بهم البيت الأبيض صباح يوم جميل في 13 من أيلول- سبتمبر 1993، وقع رئيس منظمة التحرير الفلسطينية ياسر عرفات ورئيس وزراء إسرائيل إسحاق رابين على اتفاق أوسلو بمباركة الرئيس بيل كلينتون، بهدف "إنهاء النزاع" بين الفلسطينيين واليهود. كثيرون في المنطقة، وخاصة في الغرب رأوا في الحدث "التاريخي" بداية النهاية للصراع الطويل بين العرب وإسرائيل. عناوين الصحف الأمريكية آنذاك نضحت بتفاؤل يصعب اليوم تصديقه او تخيله : "انتصار الامل على التاريخ" و "يوم مجيد" و "نهاية رمزية لعقود من النزاع". يوم الأربعاء الماضي جاءت الذكرى الخامسة والعشرون لاتفاقية أوسلو. ولكن هذه المرة، لم يحتفل أحد بالاتفاق أو بوعوده بالاستقلال للفلسطينيين والسلم لإسرائيل

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi’s September 10 visit to Basra came after an increasingly tense security situation in the southern Iraqi city. Violent protests claimed at least 15 lives, the airport in Basra, which houses the US Consulate, was targeted by a rocket attack and government offices and political parties’ headquarters were set ablaze by protesters.

Visiting Scholar

Position Title: Visiting Scholar
Period: Spring 2019

Job Summary: Visiting scholars are individuals who possess a PhD or equivalent professional experience. The length of stay for a visiting scholar is typically a semester or academic year. AGSIW is actively seeking candidates with significant regional experience and fluency in written and spoken Arabic. AGSIW will provide a stipend that can be used to cover living expenses, travel costs, or incidental research expenses.
