Egypt and the Gulf Cooperation Council countries have a complex, but indispensable, diplomatic, military, and political partnership in the contemporary world. Egypt represents the epicenter of the Arab population – as by far the most human resource-rich Arab country – and is a traditional cultural powerhouse in the Arab world at both the intellectual and popular levels. It is also, arguably, the sole contemporary Arab country that is an ancient and relatively homogeneous nation-state with borders that have been recognized for many centuries. Read more
The current challenge for the oil and gas exporting states of the Gulf Cooperation Council rests in diversification of their economies, and perhaps more importantly, in the activation of a more productive and efficient workforce. That workforce is increasingly divided among nationals dominating the public sector and non-nationals populating the private sector. Women are underrepresented in the labor force, in the public and private sectors, across the GCC. Where there is greater integration of both national and non-national women in the labor force, there is also generally more opportunity for women’s political participation. Read more
Washington’s relations with its Gulf Arab partners have been strained in recent years, particularly because of U.S. outreach to Iran and concerns that the United States may be seeking a broader rapprochement with Tehran, largely at Gulf Arab expense. In recent months, however, evidence has been mounting that these concerns, particularly regarding the impact of the nuclear agreement with Iran, may have been premature. The first British Prime Minister to ever address a Gulf Cooperation Council summit, Theresa May, pledged on Wednesday in the Bahraini capital, Manama, to enhance security and defense cooperation with the alliance. “Gulf security is our security. On November 7, AGSIW President Ambassador Marcelle M. Wahba spoke about U.S. President-elect Donald Trump and the future of U.S.-GCC relations during a panel at Kuwait University, hosted by Dr. Abdullah Al Shayji, professor of political science and former chairman of Kuwait University's political science department.
