AGSIW Senior Resident Scholar Karen E. Young spoke with Voice of America about Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030. When asked about the challenges facing the plan, she noted, “It’s expensive. It requires spending money rather than saving. In order for the plan to work, the government has to outlay a lot of funds and find public-private partnerships.” She additionally commented on the social initiatives included in Vision 2030, saying, that the social goals are “what makes it expansive and wider in scope.” She continued that investing in amusement parks is “one way of job creation, but it’s also about giving people outside-of-work activities and ways and places to mix together.” When asked about opportunities for businesses and investors, Young noted, “It’s hard to make business decisions based on a plan.” She continued, “This is still a period of anticipation.”
