Position Title: Assistant Editor
Department/Team: Publications and Digital Media
The Arab Gulf States Institute in Washington seeks an Assistant Editor to assist in editing publications of AGSIW’s expanding portfolio of written work. The position will also involve work on maintenance of digital content on AGSIW.org and related platforms.
Washington, DC – Hybrid
Full-Time/Benefits Eligible: Medical, Dental, Vision, 403(b)
Starting Salary $50,000 – $55,000 a Year
Primary Responsibilities
Copy Editing
- Coordinate with chief content officer and executive editor to ensure clean copy on AGSIW publications, including blog posts and long-form publications
- Copy edit publications for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and formatting, adhering to the rules and guidelines of the Associated Press Stylebook and AGSIW house style guide
- Confirm factual information, including dates, spelling of names, titles, and affiliations, etc.
- Verify publication sourcing for accuracy and relevancy
Secondary Responsibilities
Website Content
- Assist digital media manager with updating website content, including blog posts, event announcements, papers, biographies, and other material
- Assist digital content manager with formatting long-form publications in InDesign
- Source images using AGSIW’s image subscriptions
- Create graphics using Canva and Venngage
- Assist digital media manager in preparing email campaigns, including the weekly newsletter, event announcements, and publications
- Track AGSIW media mentions and outreach for the weekly newsletter
- Maintain and update email listserv
Social Media Marketing
- Update social media platforms in accordance with AGSIW social media guidelines
- Other digital content duties as assigned
Qualifications
Required:
- 2-3 years of experience copy editing for a publication, media outlet, or similar institution
- Familiarity with AP Style and Chicago Style
- Exceptional attention to detail
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Knowledge of Middle Eastern and Gulf affairs
- Proven ability to work effectively both as a team member and independently, and demonstrated ability to prioritize, multitask, and work with minimal supervision in a team environment
- Bachelor’s degree required
Desirable:
- 1-2 years of experience in website content management (WordPress)
- 1-2 years of experience in email creation and management (Mailchimp)
- 1-2 years of experience in social media maintenance (X/Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn)
- Experience using Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop)
- Master’s degree a bonus
